History of Grand Prairie
The city known as Grand Prairie today was founded in 1863 by a man named Alexander Dechman. After purchasing nearly 240 acres of land in the area, Dechman named the territory Dechman after himself. Although he traded much of his land to the T&P Railroad in 1876, his son Alexander took over the remaining land.
Alexander influenced much of the city's development by establishing a trading post in the area and helping to build a church, a post office, a school and several small businesses. It was in the late 1800s when the town's name was changed to Grand Prairie, and in 1909, the town was incorporated as a city of Texas.
